FOV Calculator

Work out the correct field of view for your rig, so cars, kerbs and braking markers look the right size and distance away. Enter your screen size and how far your eyes are from the screen, and you'll get the value to type into each sim – for single, triple and curved screens.

FOV settings for each sim

Sims don't all use the same measurement: some take the vertical angle, some the horizontal angle and some a slider. The values above are already converted. Where a figure comes from the sim racing community rather than the developer, it's marked with * – if a sim has changed, let us know on Discord.

How to set the correct FOV

  • Set your seat first. Get your driving position, eye height and mirrors right, then measure the distance and set the FOV.
  • Measure, don't guess. Use a tape measure from between your eyes to the screen. A wrong distance is the most common reason the view feels off.
  • It will feel narrow at first. The correct FOV is usually much lower than the default. Give it a few sessions – braking points and speed feel far more natural once you're used to it.
  • Small screen, far away? If the correct value feels too zoomed in, move the screen closer rather than raising the FOV. Most drivers settle a little above the correct figure as a compromise.

Triple screen FOV and monitor angles

  • Angle the side screens to the best side angle shown above. Then all three screens sit at the same distance from your eyes and the picture lines up across the bezels.
  • Turn on the sim's triple-screen mode and enter the angle (and bezel width where asked). The sim renders each screen with the correct perspective.
  • Most sims want the single-screen value on triples, because the vertical angle doesn't change. iRacing and Project CARS are the exceptions and take the total horizontal angle.
  • Same size screens. The calculator assumes three matching monitors.

Frequently asked questions

What is FOV in sim racing?

FOV (field of view) is how much of the virtual world the sim shows on your screen. The correct FOV makes the screen act like a window into the car: other cars, kerbs and braking markers appear at their real size and distance, so judging braking points and gaps feels natural.

How do I work out the correct FOV?

Measure your screen size and the distance from your eyes to the screen. The horizontal FOV is 2 x arctan(half the screen width / distance) and the vertical FOV is the same using half the screen height. For example, a 27-inch 16:9 screen at 65 cm gives about 49 degrees horizontal and 29 degrees vertical. The calculator does this for you and converts it for each sim.

What FOV should I use in Le Mans Ultimate, ACC or rFactor 2?

Le Mans Ultimate, rFactor 2, Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Assetto Corsa EVO and RaceRoom all use vertical FOV in degrees. Use the vertical value from the calculator. It stays the same on triple screens, because the height of the picture doesn't change.

Does iRacing use horizontal or vertical FOV?

iRacing uses horizontal FOV. On a single screen enter the horizontal value for one screen. On triple screens iRacing wants the total horizontal angle across all three; its own Field of View Calculator (Settings, Display, Monitor, then Compute) should land on the same total as this calculator.

What angle should my triple screens be at?

Angle each side screen by the same amount as one screen's horizontal FOV, including the bezels. That puts all three screens the same distance from your eyes, so the picture lines up across the joins. For three 32-inch 16:9 screens at 65 cm with 8 mm bezels, that's about 58 degrees. The calculator shows the best angle for your setup.

Does screen resolution affect FOV?

No. FOV only depends on the physical size and shape of the screen and how far away you sit. A 27-inch 1080p screen and a 27-inch 4K screen need exactly the same FOV.

Why does the correct FOV feel so zoomed in?

Most sims default to a much wider view than is correct for a desk or rig screen, so the correct value can look narrow at first. Give it a few sessions: speed and braking points feel more natural once you're used to it. If it's still too narrow, move the screen closer rather than raising the FOV.

Do curved monitors change the FOV?

A little. The edges of a curved screen are closer to you than the centre, so it covers a slightly wider angle than a flat screen of the same size. Tick Curved screen and enter the radius (for example 1000R or 1800R) to include it.

Do I need to set FOV in VR?

No. In VR the headset sets the field of view, and the sim reads it automatically, so leave the in-game FOV alone. This calculator is for single, triple and ultrawide screens.

Is the FOV calculator free?

Yes, it's free for everyone. If you enjoy clean, friendly racing, join the Transatlantic Sim Racing community on Discord and take part in a championship.
